The Turing machine model and “natural computation”

Gordana Dodig-Crnkovic, member of our recently established Research Group on Emergent Systems, Information and Society, will visit Vienna and give a talk on A Taxonomy of Computation and Information Architecture.

The question is how the turing model of computation relates to self-organisation of natural systems: Are they different or do they have something in common? Mrs. Dodig-Crnkovic contends the position that “the Turing model of computation presents only one aspect of computation in the real world”, of “natural computation” that is “intrinsic to physical systems, and particularly cognitive computation in cognitive systems”. Together with Mark Burgin, a mathematician from the UCLA, she sees “the Turing model of computation as a basic mechanism that can be used to build more complex computational architectures, which in combination with interaction with the environment (learning) give advanced information-processing behaviors in cognitive systems”.

The talk fits well the scope of the Research Group: How can computer science issues be approached from a systems theoretical angle?

The talk is held on Tuesday, 13 October, 2015 , 16:15–17:45, at the Heinz-Zemanek-Saal, OCG (Österreichische Computer Gesellschaft), Wollzeile 1, 1010 Wien. The event is open to the public.

Mrs. Dodig-Crnkovic is Professor of Computer Science at Mälardalen University and Associate Professor at Chalmers University of Technology and the University of Gothenburg, where she is Vice-Dean for doctoral education at the Department of Applied Information Technology. She is current President of the International Society for Information Studies (ISIS).

The event is organised by the BCSSS, the Austrian Computer Society Working Group Information Studies, and the Institute for Design and Technology Assessment of the TU Wien.
