Michele Battle-Fisher, BCSSS member, was a presenter at TEDxDartmouth on 21 April 2018 at Dartmouth College, USA. In line with the conference’s theme “Paradigm Shift”, Michele spoke about the innovation of teaching systems thinking to medical students. Systems thinking is meant to highlight just how dynamically human we are as patients. In response to the need to develop complexity-savvy clinicians, an innovative required curriculum being tried in the United States is called Health Systems Science, the “third pillar of medicine” alongside basic and clinical sciences. Michele answers why delving into tackling complexity within medical school pedagogy will make physicians better prepared for medical practice. This talk was given at a TEDx event using the TED conference format but independently organized by a local community. The talk, “Can a systems thinking curriculum improve health outcomes?” is streamable on YouTube. A free interactive, customizable TED-Ed lesson (Systems Thinking, Health Systems Science and Tackling Complex Health Care) based on this talk is available.

Michele Battle-Fisher is a scholar of health systems science, specializing in using systems thinking in public health policy, bioethics and clinical medicine. As Adjunct Assistant Professor at Wright State University Boonshoft School of Medicine, she wrote Application of Systems Thinking to Health Policy and Public Health Ethics- Public Health and Private Illness (Springer), a 2016 Doody’s Core Title.

We at the BCSSS congratulate Michele to her outstanding contribution and success!
